Grayling Memorial Float Construction Notes:

Described below in text and photographs is the Construction process

  • Dan Moss obtained blue prints from Pearl Harbor Shipyard and down-scaled them.
  • Keel, main deck and selected frames are 1/2 " plywood. Styrofoam blocks were carved to fill in between frames. Several coats of drywall mud were applied and sanded to complete the final shape. A body shop owner then applied a 1/16" fiberglass coating over the entire Boat. The Deck Grey paint was applied by the same shop.
  • The Boat signal flags were made by Bill O'Haleran WWII Veteran. I believe they spell out USS Grayling SS 209.
  • The topside figures and topside hardware were hand carved by Dan who is an award winning artist and wood carver. 90% of the material was donated by local businesses.
  • The trailer was purchased by the Mile High Diggers Chapter of Submarine Veterans of World War Two.
  • The railing on the trailer was fabricated by Al Sabentino a member of Rocky Mountain Base USSVI.
  • It required an estimated 550 man-hours on the Boat model alone.
  • The Boat/trailer has been stored for many years and towed in many parades by Jim Brunemeier RMB and also Dale Bowman RMB.
